(CNN) — There’s a lot of talk about luxury’s rising prices, but it’s at auction that fashion is selling for the most eye-popping of sums. Fashion items from the sets of TV, film and even commercials can also garner high prices. Frank Augstein/APWhile selling prices are widely publicized, auction houses maintain something akin to attorney-client privilege when it comes to the identities of their bidders. In fact, much of the archival fashion seen on stars today has passed through auction. “That dress would now sell for $10 million because of that double whammy connection of a celebrity,” said Nolan.

Shari Redstone won control over her media empire in 2018 after a hard-fought struggle with CBS. Now, Ms. Redstone has decided to sell her controlling stake in Paramount, a decision that could put her in conflict with some of the company’s shareholders. The question that Paramount’s board has to answer — and may eventually have to defend in a courtroom: Is the deal under consideration good for all shareholders, or just Ms. Redstone? “Are these decisions that are being made in the best interest of Paramount generally?” said Eric Talley, a law professor at Columbia. “Or are they basically the types of decisions that are only going to give Shari Redstone a nice nut but pretty much stick it to the other minority shareholders?”

How the Renovation of a House Rocked a Famous Church

Abyssinian Baptist Church is one of the oldest Black churches in America, and certainly one of the most storied. Hundreds of mourners have gathered at the 216-year-old institution in recent years for the memorial services of Cicely Tyson and André Leon Talley. It’s the kind of church where networking mixes with Bible study, and the roll reads like a who’s who list of Black intelligentsia and entrepreneurship. A year later, Ms. Porter and her husband, Tommie Porter, hired the deacon as a contractor to lead the renovations of the $1.44 million house. “We really loved the idea of keeping it in the community,” said Ms. Porter, 44, host of “CrimeFeed” on Investigation Discovery.

A more important factor could be whether Trump's real estate assets are already mortgaged, said law professor John Coffee. "He would have to come up with clean real estate property that is not already securing something that some other bank has a lien on," Coffee said. Michele Eve Sandberg | AFP | Getty ImagesIn New York City, the value of Trump's real estate holdings totals $690 million, according to a September 2023 estimate by Forbes. New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought the fraud case, said she would seize Trump's real estate assets if he cannot pay his civil penalty. They instead offered to post a $100 million bond, but New York appeals court Judge Anil Singh rejected the proposal.

Antonio Masiello | Getty ImagesTwo weeks after a Delaware court ruled that Tesla must rescind Elon Musk's $56 billion pay package, the company's board remains mum on what the decision means for shareholders or what's next for the mercurial CEO. CNBC sent requests for additional information to Tesla investor relations, Musk and some board members. "Given the high stakes involved, it is likely that Tesla will appeal the decision," Kastiel said in an email. In the absence of a successful appeal, "any new compensation arrangement with him will have to be assessed" in light of McCormick's decision, Kastiel said. Kastiel also said that the decision likely makes Musk and Tesla more vulnerable to other types of lawsuits.

But this week, a Delaware state judge handed down a message that Musk and other powerful men in America seldom hear: Nope. The outcome of Musk’s pay package dispute is the latest instance of a towering, brash business leader getting put in his place by the one institution powerful enough to do so: US courts. Kathaleen McCormick struck down Elon Musk’s 2018 Tesla pay package after an investor challenged it as excessive. Kathleen Flynn/ReutersAmong the threads connecting Musk, Trump and McMahon is a history of evading negative consequences. “And if that’s the case, let that be a message to other people: The litigation system actually does work.”The pay package dispute wasn’t McCormick’s first rodeo with Musk.

“This is a basically a death penalty for a business,” said Columbia University law professor Eric Talley. Bank officials called to testify couldn’t say for sure if Trump’s personal statement of worth had any impact on the rates. His nonprofit Trump Foundation agreed to shut down in 2018 over allegations he misused funds for political and business interests. The Deutsche unit making the Trump business loans wasn’t the typical lending unit, but its private wealth division. A POTENTIAL COMPROMISETo be sure, the attorney general’s office has argued that there are larger issues than victim losses at play in Trump's case.

But an Associated Press analysis of nearly 70 years of similar cases showed Trump’s case stands apart: It’s the only big business found that was threatened with a shutdown without a showing of obvious victims and major losses. “This sets a horrible precedent,” said Adam Leitman Bailey, a New York real estate lawyer who once sued a Trump condo building. But AP’s review of nearly 150 cases reported in legal databases found that in the dozen cases calling for “dissolution,” victims and losses were key factors. The New York attorney general who filed the lawsuit, Letitia James, said that helped the ex-president receive lower interest rates. In fact, the bank made its own estimates of Trump’s personal wealth, at times lopping billions from Trump’s figures, and still decided to lend to him.

Hamas and other militants hand over newly released hostages as part of a deal with Israel. Photo: Stringer/Zuma PressISTANBUL—The Biden administration’s sanctions chief warned Turkish officials that the country is fueling violence across two continents by serving as a financing haven for Hamas and a trade hub for Russia’s war machine. Despite U.S. sanctions targeting Hamas financiers over the past decade, Turkey has allowed the group’s investment firms, holding companies, real-estate brokerages and a host of other businesses to operate out of Istanbul, U.S. officials say.

In mid-2019, Israel’s military used a precision strike on a narrow street to kill a Hamas commander whom it called Iran’s money man in Gaza. The commander ran an off-the-books system of remittances in which trusted agents shuttled physical cash and goods across borders to settle customers’ balances. This so-called hawala network, as it is known in the Middle East, funneled tens of millions of dollars in financing from Iran to Hamas’s military wing.

U.S. Targets Crypto Mixers Over Money Laundering Risks

Deputy U.S. Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, pictured during an event in September, said the department “is aggressively combating illicit use of all aspects of the [convertible virtual currency] ecosystem by terrorist groups “ Photo: Michael Nagle/Bloomberg NewsThe Biden administration designated international cryptocurrency platforms commonly known as “mixers” as primary money-laundering hubs that threaten national security. The U.S. Treasury Department’s unprecedented proposal—using laws usually deployed against foreign banks and foreign jurisdictions—will require special record-keeping and reporting for any financial transactions involving international mixers. The potential targeting of an entire class of transaction represents a significant regulatory step meant to shape the future of the global financial system.

After Hamas launched its murderous assault on Israel this month, the U.S. and its allies condemned Iran for funding what they deem a terrorist organization. Left unspoken were the many ways the international community—and even Israel itself—inadvertently helped Hamas fill its coffers. The Islamist group has raised tens of millions of dollars by skimming off humanitarian assistance and taxing economic activity stirred by a trade opening into its Gaza Strip stronghold, according to independent researchers and current and former Western security officials.

Marlowe is, of course, the most famous creation of Raymond Chandler, perhaps the most famous of American crime novelists. On the one hand, there is his glorious writing, his blue-collar heroes and the occasional profound observations about the human experience. It takes a strong stomach to read a story in which a woman needs a slap to calm her down. Crime fiction was, and is, anti-feminist. Chandler may have been a misogynist, but he definitely lived in misogynist times, and his fiction reflects that.
